PEGGY SCHADLER
Peggy Schadler is paper artist and craftsmen who has brought to life innumerable papier-mâché characters masks, props, and costumes for community celebrations and festivals. Peggy also recognized as the Founder and Artistic Director of 1000 Faces Mask Theater, a performance art group based in Rappahannock County, Virginia. In Mexican tradition, papier-mâché, known as “cartoneria" is a traditional form of folk art that has been used in celebrations and rituals for centuries. Performance Masks can be religious, magical, or theatrical and represent animals, spirits, ancestors, or mythical heroes, honor the dead, connect with the spirit world, disguise a person's identity, and strengthen social bonds by providing a sense of historic continuity and storytelling. Over the past four decades Peggy has written, directed, produced dozens of performances. Many of her theater performance masks are now being offered at SPAC Gallery.
